The animated movie Superman/Batman: Public Enemies neatly condensed into a small half hour episode, complete with the opening and closing of my custom Superman TAS sequences that I used for Risk and Revelation
This is my Superman TAS fanedit, “Risk and Revelation”, a cut of the 2006 animated feature Brainiac Attacks where I shorten it’s length to a Kids WB-friendly 24 or so minutes, and end it with Lois finally learning Clark Kent and Superman are one and the same!
This edit was inspired by the great work of Fanedit895, he got the ball rolling on this and I owe a lot of how this version turned out to his generous feedback and enthusiasm for the project
March 18th…and what a time to be alive if you worship at the alter of the almighty Zack.
I can’t say I’ve always been a fan of Snyder’s movies, I liked Man of Steel right up until the ending, and Batman v Superman is a little too try hard edgy for my tastes, but I cannot deny the man’s creativity and boldness, never too shy from giving fans a more ambitious vision for how to put together superhero films.
I am glad, despite my reservations, that the Snyder cut of JL is proving a big hit with critics and audiences as well as it’s devoted faithful who championed it’s cause for so many years.
So what about the Whedon cut? Well, let’s put it in perspective, it always suited a filler evening on the CW more than a movie theatre, so in this instance I’m putting it where it belongs, as an alternative season finale for Smallville, using the episode “Commencement” as the skeleton and JL as the meat. Sorry Henry, this is Welling’s time to take his place among the great ones, rofl.

I’ve turned the world back and revisited one of my older edits once more. This revised version of “Fourth Option” features a few additional tweeks to the finish product besides the ending this time.
For instance, I thought it’d be a bit comical if Lex and Tessmarcher snuck into the fortress of solitude while Lois and Clark were sleeping. Lex doesn’t yell “IT’S FANTASTIC”, otherwise he’d wake the pair of them up.
What was so brilliantly well timed about all this, very happy accident here, was that while you can hear Lex and Tessmarcher quietly acknowledge how “fantastic” the fortress is, it’s enough to briefly stir Lois out of her slumber before she snuggles back into the sack with Supes.
Also gone is Lex tinkering with the education crystals and stumbles on the poem ‘trees’ read by Jor-El. Instead, now Jor-El tells them of the Kryptonian criminals right out of the gate. This is what we want to hear.
It also serves as necessary backstory, as I decided to also remove the recap of Superman The Movie at the start. I always felt this was much better for the pacing of the movie. Assuming you haven’t seen Superman Superman The Movie first, it is better we learn about Zod and company at the same time as Lex does.
Lastly, in a minor fix, Clark greets Lois at the Planet and Lois teases blurting out his ID in public before typing in her headline. Clark’s gonna be kept awful busy now that Lois is sticking by him, he’ll need all the energy.
Here are my thoughts, having viewed the whole thing (spoilers)
Let’s get the obvious out the way first…WOW
Now onto the meat of the matter.
I’ve seen edits that alter narratives many a time, but the sheer amount of narrative changes he put together for this is just mesmerising. He took stuff from later episodes, deposited them at earlier points in the series, and somehow it all fits together. This is a testament to not just how diligent he is at episodic research, but also shows Smallville is full of moments that can fit just about any scenario with a few touch-ups.
I was very surprised at how quick he got Tom in the suit, moments after the fortress was formed even…but I suppose that was to be expected considering the pace of the remaining Kryptonian’s arrival. We’d had two hours plus of build-up, so by this juncture the audience have licked their lips long enough so serve up the main course!
How you structured Lois and Clark’s relationship to begin as work colleagues rather than as close friends from high school was a fine comics accurate-touch, and it allowed Lois to really peak in her element as a feisty, determined intrepid reporter digging as far as she can down the rabbit holes.
Lex’s journey was the most consistent from what we know of his tv portrayal, a few minor creative tweeks and omissions, but the themes are all there and the whole story plays out fairly straight forward, right up until the fortress invasion, that was a treat, I felt Lex and Jor-El never truly having a confrontation was a major element Smallville missed taking true advantage of.
I don’t think there’s too many things to critique, at least things he might already be aware of himself (I noticed a repeated frame in part six during the Crosby and Marth conversation), perhaps there was one too many dream sequences for my liking too, some parts of that confused me, particularly during the Lana and Teague fight, and Lex at the fortress…I know “Arctic” doesn’t give anyone a whole lot to work with, but I’m having some issue understanding what Kara rescued him from, I thought it was going to end with him being transported to the Phantom Zone until the scene with Kara.
I’ve had moments altering narratives in edits where I feel it made more sense in my head than anyone elses’, rofl. If he can explain these things, I’ll have an easier time understanding the decisions and choices.
Overall, Man of Steel provided some tender meat to a pleasantly functional skeleton, everything fused together, and those little issues noted above aside, I will state with great enthusiasm this guy has stitched together the best fan edit of 2020, and definitely one of the best Superman edits of all time. This is what Smallville was always capable of being, it has the best Superman cast, the best ‘young’ depictions of the characters, and is a great spin on the hero’s journey template.
I hope this edit inspires others, as much as it inspires me, to be more creative with their own editing projects and dare to think and do different.
Hopefully any kind of sequel won’t take up another seven years, but then, perfection cannot be rushed!
Cranked this one out over the course of the week. Superman Returns was one of the earliest edits I ever attempted in my cruder amateur days, and now with more experience and a burst of inspiration, I’ve come up with what I hope is a worthwhile edit that helps make the movie more of a highlight reel for the man of steel and what he stands for than some dreary deconstruction
-Pre-titles sequence using the scene where Lex raids the fortress
-Scenes rearranged, which includes inserting the last scene of the movie into a much earlier point, meaning Clark is aware right from the outset that Jason is his son. Instead of learning who he is on the boat, we learn it from Clark as he watches Jason in bed at Lois’ home (yes, I retained Stalkerman for narrative purposes), and Lois and Kal’s first meeting is after he visits Jason’s bedroom.-Superman’s return to public service occurs with taking out the bank robber
-Lois’ bitchier moments trimmed and lessened so she comes off as more emotionally conflicted…she’s not mad at Superman, just dissapointed, and often wrestles with publishing a new piece about why the world needs him, it was important to place the scene where she can’t type up that piece before she meets Clark outside her home to demonstrate how conflicted she is on her opinion.
-Lois and Richard laughing at Clark cut
-Lex reading the paper skips over the Superman headline for reasons that’ll become clear as you read this cut list
-Clark and Lois’ rooftop meeting trimmed so the tension is lessened, at least until the moment they almost kiss. Lois is accepting of Clarks’ presence and they go for a flyby.
-Clark’s conversation with Martha moved along to just before he heads over to the Fortress to find the crystals missing
-Film proceeds as normal until Clark is hospitalised. Lois visiting him cut because…
-After Clark awakens, we cut to the new ending…the shuttle rescue
-Flyby over the earth trimmed significantly to properly synchronise with the music after Clark takes off from the stadium. Lois fainting cut.
