Doctor Who-The Name of The Doctor [Fanedit]

Another “renegade” edit that won’t find itself on IFDB, and a long overdue re-hauling of a prior edit that first surfaced on this site back in 2015.

The Name of the Doctor was the last stop before the 50th anniversary, a tidy little story in which the Doctor travelled to the site of his own grave to prevent the Great Intelligence from making fleeting cameo appearances across his entire time stream, getting up to all kinds of unexplained mischief, unravelling the Doctor’s influence on the universe and reducing it to ruin .

It’s never made entirely clear how he sets about poisoning every friendship and killing him time and again, it’s just said rather than shown, which hurts the impact. I know there’s only so much you can do with archive footage and inserting Richard E Grant into them, it’d have helped if they’d been a little less lazier and put together the Intelligence confronting stunt doubles not dissimilar to the ones that are running around Clara in the Doctor’s timestream.

First thing to go was the man tortured by the Whispermen, telling Vastra and Jenny that The Doctor’s greatest secret had been discovered. For one, this information is regurgitated by Clara later in the episode, so this really boils down to padding and to give the Paternoster gang something to do to set up their big psychic meeting with River and Clara. I figured we’d best get to that meeting quick as we can, so the episode now opens with Clara receiving Vastra’s letter and being deposited into the dream. The titles then hit as Vastra asks Clara the question “what is his name”

Another change I made was moving up the pre-titles of Clara meeting the various Doctors in the timestream to just after she enters it near the end of the episode, I had to time the end of this very carefully to avoid bleeding into the DW sting that led to the title sequence. I think for the most part I succeeded without making it sound too abrupt. It’s not ideal, but it’s servicable.

The next change was to Clara in the Doctor’s timestream, cutting her observing the Ninth Doctor, saying she’d seen eleven faces, and that she “never saw that one”

The reason?

This edit makes use of yet another dazzling effort from Youtube content creator  Olivercomet

Comet was responsible for the Paul McGann to John Hurt regeneration and post-regeneration scene that made up the concluding half of my “renegade” edit of Night of the Doctor. Here, he pulls off another miracle, incorporating Christopher Eccelston’s Ninth Doctor into the Name of the Doctor narrative in place of John Hurt. The original idea behind the 50th was to indeed put Nine at the forefront of the narrative, but Eccelston did not wish to play, so we got Hurt and the War Doctor mythology added to the show instead. Not a bad trade off, but oh the tantalising question of “What if…”.

At least with this edit, we can satisfy our curiosity.

UPDATE: I was notified by someone that I had not asked Comet for permission in using his footage for these edits. I had taken the time to comment on his Youtube pages for the videos letting him know I was doing these edits for fun and to see how they would look attached to full episodes. If he has a problem, he can contact me and we can discuss, but seeing as I’m not taking credit for any of his hard work and am acknowledging and even promoting his videos on the website, I hope he takes account of that gesture and gives these edits their blessing.

For now though, they’re staying up.
